ABOUT THE FARMERS
FARMERS KELLY SIMPSON-ANGELINI AND MARISSA MATHEWS
We are Kelly and Marissa and we are super excited to be your organic farmers. We have a lifetime of passion for farming and family. We purchased our family farm here in Deep River in the winter of 2015 and named it Deep River Farms. We have worked really hard with our family, friends, and our staff over the past 12 months to repair our barns and buildings, clean up our fields and pastures, and nurture the health of our organic soil. We are anxious to see what grows best on our farm and to connect with our community of families here on the Connecticut shoreline. We have erected two 100-foot-long hoop houses in the back field so we can begin to learn about winter farming methods and grow food all year round. We are excited to grow healthy food for you and invite you to visit our farm, talk to us and taste our vegetables, and give us feedback and suggestions. Please tell us how we can share our farm with you and your family. We want to hear from you and hope to see you at the farm.
FARMER MARISSA AND FARMER KELLY
Marissa was born and raised in Cranston, Rhode Island and spent summers working in the family orchards and farms, exploring the natural beauty of the Narragansett Bay.
Kelly was born and raised in the Adirondack Mountains in a small town called Warrensburg, New York and grew up exploring the land and all the nature the Adirondacks has to offer.
Both Kelly and Marissa have formal backgrounds in the sciences and have pursued careers in Technology and Healthcare Education during the past few decades. They have a passion for quality food, food experiences, cooking, nature, health, and outdoor activities. They shared the dream to start a small farm, rescue animals, make cheese, and grow healthy produce, eggs, and other healthy products. They are beginner farmers, and their vision is to bring high-quality agritourism to our community. They are learning rapidly about all that goes into starting a farm from scratch and connecting their farm to the community, families, and local schools. In the years ahead, they aspire to connect with the local schoolchildren to teach them about farming, land sustainability, and organically grown vegetables. A dream of theirs is to share their farm experience with the community of children here in Deep River, Connecticut, and the surrounding shoreline towns.
Hi there! My name is farmer Luca Angelini. I am proud to have worked with my family to start this small farm from scratch. I have moved dirt, mucked the chicken and goat sheds, collected eggs, fed the animals, planted the fields, and harvested the vegetables. I am very proud to work and play on our farm. Come visit and we will take you for a tour.
Welcome to Deep River Farms. My name is Maria Angelini. As an animal activist, photographer, farmer, and artist, I’m always pleased to answer any questions you have about our animals and breeds at our farm. On August 6, 2015, I started to explore photography. My first camera was a Nikon. I highly recommend this brand for a starting or experienced photographer. If you have any questions about our animals, I would be proud and excited to explore them with you. I have all of the information for our farm animals–from the time of the day our first kid was born to what their favorite activity is (you name it)! I regularly muck stalls, feed our animals, harvest, weed, and many other necessary jobs. As the farmers’ daughter, I have my roots planted in this farm, and dirt will always be in my blood. When you get your hands in the dirt and when you get to know the animals, that’s when you can really learn the most about some of the most beautiful things in this life. This is where I come from, and it’s the place that I am proud to call home.
